What do you need to know when considering direct sales vs. multi level marketing? First, you must understand exactly what each marketing model is. There is a lot misunderstanding about each form of selling system. One system is not better than the other. However, one system may be a better fit for an individual's particular situation. This is why before making an important career choice, you must understand the facts about both marketing models.
With direct sales, the product or service is sold directly to a customer and the sales person earns a sales commission on their sales production. A sales person's compensation is straight forward. A sales person makes a sale and earns a commission. The commission is not shared by anyone else such as a sales manager. A sales manager's compensation is probably based on the sales production of the sales people they manage but their commission is an override commission that does not come out of the sales person's commission.
Direct sales promotes its business using traditional advertising in print and electronic media. Your customer based is not dependent on your network of family, friends and co-workers. Sometimes the sales person is assigned a sales territory and can only make sales within this territory. The types of products sold via direct sales tend to be durable high ticket items like art work, gems, or antiques. They are not the type of products that a customer will consume and then reorder. Therefore, the sales person in direct sales is constantly prospecting for new customers.
Multi level marketing or, as it is often referred to, network marketing is a completely different marketing model than direct selling. When you join a network marketing organization you are part of a hierarchical organization structure where revenue flows from the lower levels up to the higher levels. Equal emphasis is placed on recruiting other sales associates as in making actual sales. Network marketing does not use print or media advertising to market their products. Instead, they market by word of mouth, through house parties, and through a network of family, friends, and co-workers.
The products in network sales tend to be products that people will consume on a day to day basis. Common types of products that you will see sold via network marketing organizations are soaps and personal care products, household cleaners, and vitamins and food supplements. These types of products are consumed and then need to be reordered. They encourage repeat regular sales which can generate a consistent predictable income. You will receive a commission from the sales everyone down the chain of your organization makes. This is known as residual income.
One nice aspect about network marketing is that it does not require a large financial investment. Usually the only investment is an inexpensive distributor kit. Your company will drop-ship the products you sell to the customer. Customers can go to your company's web page to reorder products and you will automatically get your commissions and bonuses without having to do any more work. That's a pretty good deal. Since products are drop-shipped, you avoid the expense of maintaining an inventory.
To be successful in running a network marketing business you must be able to recruit and motivate others. Most network marketing will offer instructions on techniques for motivating recruits but this is not a subject that is easily taught or learned. For those who are not interested in building and managing a sales organization, direct selling may be a better career choice. The opportunity to earn lifelong residual income from building your own sales organization may motivate some to try to learn the art of motivating others.
When trying to decide direct sales vs. multi level marketing there is no right answer to the question. Both offer great career opportunities. The important thing is to learn the facts and base your decision on what is a good fit for you.
